Honoring the Earth Meditation Walk (details changed)

Dear Friends,

UPDATE May 26: See this post; date/time is July 14 at noon, and in Bible Park, not Cook Park.
UPDATE April 5: the meditation walk will NOT be on April 6 after all. We don’t know when it will be, but hopefully soon. Stay tuned for further details.

We will meet at Cook Park (on Cherry Creek South off of Monaco) in front of the swimming pool to the left of the Recreation Center Building. Parking is available in two lots at the entrance to the park.

We will sing some songs and then circle the park walking in noble silence. We will pause several times in stillness and do an intention circle at the end. The walk will last about an hour. After the walk all are invited to my home (about a mile away) for tea and snacks. Come to the walk and we’ll give you the exact address and directions. Feel free to bring snacks to share.

March 14 Sangha cancelled

Because of the severe winter storm moving into the area, we are reluctantly cancelling the Sangha meeting for Thursday, March 14, 2024, at University Park UMC in Denver. We’ll see you next week, or at the Sunday sangha via Zoom. In the meantime, stay safe and warm.

Walk for Global Peace – Sat., Nov. 18

    
Let’s Walk for Global Peace
at Bible park in SouthEast Denver at 1:15PM on Saturday Nov 18th.
This will be an Eyes of Compassion silent walk. Significant others are welcome.
We will:
  • circle up at the far end of the YALE AVE parking lot in front of the ball field.
  • sound the bell for noble silence at 1:25,
  • offer 5 minutes of noble silence in stillness for peace around the world,
  • listen to a letter from Plum Village,
  • walk slowly along the  (wide hard packed dirt) canal path silently embodying peace through the quality of each step,
  • return near our starting place (~ 30 minutes total walking meditation) and
  • circle up again offering a final 5 minutes of still noble silence.
Directions to James A. Bible Park Yale Ave parking lot:
6802 E. Yale Ave, Denver
From I-25, Exit on Yale heading East.
Entrance to parking lot is on the right about 0.8 miles just past Monaco.
Following the walk tea and cider will be offered at the Cowden Cottage, which is less than two miles away. For those of you who don’t know where this is, ask me (Sandy) for directions at the event.

Be-In on Wednesday Oct. 4!

Hello Dear Sangha,

We are excited to announce the celebration of Thay’s continuation as well as a Be-In next Wake Up 10/4 from 6:30pm-8pm at University Park United Methodist Church! This event will be open to both Wake Up as well as the larger Eyes of Compassion sangha.
A Be-In is a lovely Plum Village tradition in which the community gathers together to mindfully drink tea, have desserts, and share with each other. Please bring something you’d like to share with the sangha! Examples of sharing could be a song you like (or want to perform or sing with others), a dance, a story, a poem, a joke, a piece of art, a gratitude, etc.
It is also Thay’s birthday/continuation day on October 11, which we will be celebrating early with this Be-In.

Sangha Picnic and Annual Meeting – August 20

Our sangha will be gathering for a picnic in the park, followed by our annual meeting, and hope you can join us!
Date: Sunday, August 20, noon – 3 pm
Place: Cook Park, 7100 Cherry Creek South Drive, Denver (near the intersection of Cherry Creek South Dr. and S. Monaco Pkwy).  Enter the parking lot off Cherry Creek South Drive, look to the west, and you will see a pavilion just a short walk away.  You have arrived!  We had a sangha picnic here a couple of years ago.  See below for the link to a map of the park.
Food and Drink:  Please bring your own vegetarian sack lunch, tea, coffee, or other non-alcoholic drink, and a reusable water bottle. We’ll also have water available in a cooler.
And–there will be cake.
Also, we’ll have a flip chart suggestion session, so bring any ideas of what you’d like to see our sangha do as we continue beautifully into the future.  This day will provide a leisurely opportunity to get to know each other better and strengthen our community.

Matt Sherman

Our beloved friend and dharma teacher, Matt Sherman, passed away on July 18, 2023, at about 6 pm MT. Our whole community deeply mourns his passing.

Matt was the face of Eyes of Compassion Sangha for many years. He and his wife Margit are dear to us. Matt will be missed so very much, but interbeing tells us he lives in the spirit if our Sangha. We send love and compassion to Matt and to Margit. Continue reading “Matt Sherman”

“Day of Mindfulness” on Earth Day

Eyes of Compassion Sangha sponsored a Day of Mindfulness on Earth Day, April 22, with dharma teacher Viviane Ephraimson-Abt. Held at the Church of the Transfiguration in Evergreen, the theme for the day was “Love Yourself, Love the Earth.” Once registration opened, the event quickly filled up to the maximum of 45 attendees the space could hold. A deep bow of appreciation to Sandy Cowden for organizing the event, along with many volunteers who helped make it happen, and to Craig Cowden for taking these photos. David Hughes (1947–2022)

Our beloved local dharma teacher, David Hughes, passed away on October 31, 2022. Our whole community deeply mourns his passing. A Celebration of Life will be held in Maine on Saturday, December 17, from 11am-2pm at the Nonantum Resort in Kennebunkport. Eyes of Compassion Sangha is planning a local celebration of his life to take place after the first of the year, which will be announced on the EoC email list and on this website. In gratitude for and in honor of Dave’s life, the family requests any donations be made to the Thich Nhat Hanh Foundation, which fosters peace and community among all people, animals, plants, and our planet.

Mindfulness retreat near Colorado Springs

The Elemental Way Retreat Planning Team cordially invites you to join us for a residential retreat in Colorado! Join Dharma Teachers Peggy Rowe, EdD, Larry Ward, PhD, Viviane Ephraimson-Abt, MsEd, and the Colorado Sanghas for a retreat sponsored by the Colorado Community for Mindful Living.
It is sure to be a very enriching and life-changing event. Our retreat will be held at the beautiful La Foret Retreat Center in the Black Forest outside of Colorado Springs from November 10th to 14th.   From September 1st to the 14th, we have had a regional registration period for Sanghas in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, and New Mexico.  As of today (Sept. 15), the retreat registration is being posted to the larger community.
